Quack Quack Quilt is a duck baby quilt designed especially with a toddler in mind—soft, simple, and made for snuggling. A mama duck leads three ducklings along the water, framed by a traditional Flying Geese border. Minimal piecing keeps the surface smooth against tender skin, while a luxuriously soft banana-yellow Minky backing makes it especially cozy.

The Story
Quack Quack Quilt began with a piece of banana-yellow Minky—and a little bit of hindsight.
After I finished Down By the Rio, my first duck baby quilt, I found this wonderfully soft yellow Minky dot and immediately wished I had used something like it for the backing. Then I thought: Why not make another duck quilt?
This time, I designed the quilt specifically with a toddler in mind. I kept the piecing simple so there would be fewer seams and ridges to rub against tender skin and chose that wonderfully soft Minky for the back. The design is equally simple: a mama duck followed by three ducklings walking along the water, surrounded by a border of traditional Flying Geese.
The fabrics bring together old and new. Gingham and small floral prints give the appliqué a traditional feel, while the dotted Minky backing and African Samba edge-to-edge quilting add a more contemporary touch.
Somewhere along the way, one duck quilt became a plan for three.
Down By the Rio can belong to Dad, who loves the Southwest. Quack Quack Quilt is for Baby Boy. And Mom? She needs a duck quilt of her own.
That one hasn’t been designed yet—but the ideas are already swirling around in my head.
