Quirky Bird Quilt

Quirky Birds is a playful flock of colorful, one-of-a-kind birds, each pieced from scraps pulled from my fabric collection. No two are quite alike, which is exactly what makes this quilt so much fun.

The Story

I wanted to make a quilt for my mom, who is an avid bird watcher. When these funny little birds showed up in my Pinterest feed, I knew immediately that they were just right for her—and that I wanted to make them.

The instructions were for scrappy birds, so I started pulling pieces from my scrap collection and playing with different colors and prints. The birds were surprisingly easy to piece, and I quickly discovered that I could change their sizes and shapes as I went. Some became tall and skinny, some short and plump, and each developed a personality of its own.

That freedom was what made this quilt so much fun to sew. Instead of worrying about making every bird match, I could simply play with fabric, color, and shape. By the time the flock was finished, no two birds were quite alike—which seemed entirely appropriate for a quilt made for a bird watcher.
