What to Expect

From our first conversation to the day your finished quilt comes home, I want the process to feel simple, clear, and personal.

Every quilt comes with its own story, and every quilter has different hopes for how that quilt will be finished. We’ll talk through what you have in mind, look at the options together, and make decisions that suit both your quilt and your vision. Along the way, you’ll always know what comes next, what your choices are, and what to expect.

Most importantly, your quilt will be treated with the same care and attention I would give one of my own.

BEFORE

WE BEGIN

When We Work Together

I’m glad you’re considering Quiltworks Studio for your quilt. Here’s how the process usually unfolds so you know exactly what to expect.

1. Getting Started

Send me a message through the contact form (or email) with a few details:

  • Approximate size of your quilt
  • Photos of the top (and backing if you already have it)
  • Whether you’re interested in edge-to-edge, custom quilting, binding, or a full commission
  • Any special inspiration, deadline, or preferences

I’ll reply within 1–2 business days with thoughts, design ideas if needed, a clear estimate, and the next steps.

2. Preparing Your Quilt

I’ll send you simple prep guidelines once we decide to move forward. In short:

  • Quilt top should be pressed and free of loose threads
  • Backing should be 4–6 inches larger on all sides
  • Batting can be provided by you or ordered through me

3. Timeline

Most edge-to-edge projects are completed in 1-2 weeks after I receive your quilt. Custom work and commissions take longer and depend on complexity—I’ll give you a realistic window when we talk. If you have a hard deadline, just let me know up front.

4. During the Process

You’ll receive a quick update when your quilt arrives and again when quilting is finished. I’m happy to share progress photos or discuss thread choices along the way. Above all, communication is open and friendly—no surprises.

5. Finishing & Return

Once the quilting (and optional binding) is complete, I’ll carefully package your quilt and ship it back to you, or arrange local pickup if you’re nearby. Payment is due when the work is finished.

My Goal Every quilt that leaves the studio should feel like it has been handled with care and attention. Whether it’s a simple edge-to-edge finish or a fully custom piece, I want the finished quilt to bring you joy for years to come.

COMMON

QUESTIONS

Questions You May Have

How should I prepare my quilt top?

Press it well, trim loose threads, and keep the edges reasonably straight. Backing should be at least 4–6 inches larger on all sides. I’ll send you a short prep checklist once we move forward.

Edge-to-edge quilting is $0.03 per square inch. Custom quilting ranges from $0.05–$0.07 per square inch depending on density and complexity. Binding is priced per linear inch. Commissioned tops are quoted individually. You’ll always receive a clear estimate before we begin.

Most edge-to-edge projects are finished in 1–2 weeks after I receive your quilt. Custom work and commissions take longer depending on the design. I’ll give you a realistic timeline when we discuss your project.

Edge-to-edge uses one continuous design across the whole quilt—beautiful, consistent, and more affordable. Custom quilting varies the motifs in different areas so the stitching becomes part of the design story.

Do I need to provide batting and backing

You can supply your own, or I can provide batting (and sometimes backing) for an additional fee. Just let me know what you prefer.

Both work. I accept mail-in quilts from anywhere and local drop-off/pickup if you’re nearby.

Yes. For edge-to-edge I have a library of designs and will help you select one that suits your quilt. For custom work we plan the motifs and thread choices together.

You’ll receive prep guidelines. Ship or drop off your quilt. Get updates when it arrives and when it’s finished. Payment is due when the work is complete, and then I’ll carefully return your finished quilt
